Chapter Thirty-Nine

Paging through the files, I pulled out Richard Shaw's. He'd been released early, agreeing to be chemically castrated. It was why we passed him over.

Had we missed something? Grabbing the phone, I tapped in a number.

"Brian O'Leary, Department of Corrections."

"Hey, Brian, it's Luca."

"Yo, Frankie, how's it hanging?"

"Good. You?"

"Everything's cool. What's up?"

"I'm working a rape case, and I want to check up on somebody."

"What do you mean?"

"Guy's name is Richard Shaw. He was released early. The records indicate he's been getting his doses."

"Okay, what about it?"

"Just want to be sure there's been no mistake."

"We record the lot number and the date. You know, these guys got to come in person."

"Can you check?"

"Sure thing, Frankie. Hang on."

He clicked away on his keyboard. "All right, I got it right here. Shaw has made every one of his monthly appointments and received the required dose each time."

"Okay. Just wanted to check."

"No problem, buddy. Good to hear from ya."

"Be well, my friend."

It was worth checking. I punched in Bilotti's number. "Hey, Doc, you have a minute?"

"What's on your mind?"

"Does chemical castration work?"

He chuckled. "I have to say, I didn't see that one coming."

"You don't get asked that every day?"

"Never more than once a week."

"We're chasing a ghost in the Ramos case. A couple of recently released pervs are in the castration program. Should we be taking a closer look at them?"

"I'm not an expert in the field, but the drug administered significantly reduces testosterone. It effectively reduces it to as low as one percent of normal levels."

"Wow, it really reduces sex drive."

"Yes, and seminal fluids. But it doesn't mean a predator couldn't attack a woman. What drives these offenders is more than their sex drive. The majority is about power."

"I'm aware of that."

"The reality is, predators could be abusive even when unable to penetrate a victim."

Ramos had been penetrated. "It effects the ability to get an erection?"

"Yes."

"Thanks, Doc."

"Glad to be of help. Have a good one."

"Hold on a sec."

"Yes?"

"Is there a way to reverse it?"

"The effects of the pharmaceuticals used?"

"Yes."

"Well, time itself, erodes the effectiveness."

"Like what's happening to all of us."

He chuckled. "Father Time is undefeated."

It was my line, but he could have it. "Amen. What I meant was an antidote for the castration medicines."

"There might be. I just don't know enough about that class of drugs."

"Is there a way you can check into that?"

"I'll see what research is available."

"Thanks, Doc."

Derrick came in with a coffee. He didn't have one for me. My partner sat behind his desk.

It was hard to focus with a grown man acting like a twelve-year-old.

After ten minutes of silence, I said, "While we're waiting on Remin, you want to take the sketch to the kid who saw the man in the park?"

He shrugged. "All right."

"We're going to need to know if Noon is being himself or if he's onto something."

I handed him the sketch, and he walked out without saying anything.

Our approach was focusing on known sex offenders. It was an obvious thread to follow. But was it the right strategy?

We had nothing.
